Headache Treatment in Thornbury
Tension headaches that start in your neck and shoulders? That's what I treat.
A lot of the headaches I see in the clinic aren't really coming from the head. They start in tight neck muscles, a stiff upper back or a clenched jaw, and they spread up into the back of the head, the temples or behind the eyes.
I'm Mick, the myotherapist at Melbourne Soft Tissue Therapy, Thornbury. I work out where your headache is actually coming from, and then I treat that.

Headaches I treat
-
Tension headaches: a tight band around the head, or pressure at the back of the skull. Usually worse after long days at a desk or behind the wheel.
-
Neck-related (cervicogenic) headaches: pain that starts in the neck and spreads up one side of the head. Often worse when you turn your head or hold one position too long.
-
Jaw-related headaches: clenching or grinding, often at night, that leaves you with sore temples and a tight jaw. (See also TMJ treatment.)
-
Headaches that come with neck and shoulder pain: see neck and shoulder pain.
What a session looks like
-
Assessment. We talk about when your headaches happen, where they sit and what sets them off. Then I check your neck, upper back, shoulders and jaw to find the muscles and joints driving the pain.
-
Treatment. Hands-on soft tissue work on the neck, shoulders and the base of the skull. Plus dry needling into stubborn trigger points if it suits you (included, no extra cost).
-
A plan. A couple of simple stretches and set-up changes for your desk, car or sleep, so you're not back where you started in a week.
Most people notice a difference after the first session. If your headaches have been around for months, expect to need a few sessions to really settle them.
When to see a doctor first
Myotherapy is for headaches that come from muscles and joints. See a GP or call 000 straight away if your headache:
-
comes on suddenly and is the worst you've ever had
-
follows a knock to the head
-
comes with fever, a stiff neck, vomiting, confusion, weakness, numbness, or changes to your vision or speech
-
is new and keeps getting worse
If I think your headaches need a GP, I'll tell you straight.
