How Often Should I Get a Massage?

The Question Everyone Asks (But No One Answers Properly)

You’ve had a massage. You feel better. You walk out thinking, “I should do that more often.” But how often?

Once a week? Fortnightly? When something flares up?

Let’s cut through the fluff.

The real answer is: it depends on your body, your lifestyle, and your goals.

But I’ll give you a no-BS breakdown so you actually know what’s right for you.

First: What Do You Want From Massage?

Before we talk frequency, we need to talk intent.

Are you coming in for:

  • Injury recovery?

  • Training support?

  • General stress + tension management?

  • Long-term performance and mobility?

Each one changes the approach.

If You’re in Pain or Recovering From Injury

You need a short-term plan, not random drop-ins.

Recommended:

1–2 times per week for 2–4 weeks

Here, we’re working on:

  • Reducing inflammation and muscle guarding

  • Improving blood flow + tissue quality

  • Getting you back to pain-free movement ASAP

Once symptoms are under control, we shift into strength and resilience work.

If You’re Training Hard or Competing

You want to stay ahead of injury, not react to it.

Recommended:

Every 2–4 weeks (aligned with your training blocks)

We’ll focus on:

  • Muscle recovery between sessions

  • Treating small restrictions before they become big problems

  • Keeping joints moving well under load

Think of it like servicing your car. You don’t wait for the engine to blow before you check the oil.

If You’re Desk-Bound or Highly Stressed

Posture + stress = muscular tension. It builds slowly and it builds deep.

Recommended:

Fortnightly or monthly

This is about keeping your baseline tissue quality high so tension doesn’t start running your life.

You’ll move better, sleep better, and feel more capable.

The Maintenance Protocol (A.K.A. The Ideal)

The sweet spot for most people?

Once every 3–4 weeks

Long enough to make progress between sessions. Short enough to catch issues early. It’s also sustainable for most schedules and budgets.

You don’t wait for pain. You stay ahead of it.

What I Tell Clients at MSTT

Every client is different. But here’s what I tell them:

“Come in as often as you need to stay moving, training, and living the life you want—pain-free.”

Some come weekly during intense training. Others come monthly for tune-ups. The best ones don’t wait for things to break.

Final Word

So how often should you get a massage?

It depends.

But if you move regularly, train hard, or sit all day—once a month is the minimum you need to stay ahead of injury and perform at your best.
